Due to increased festival attendance and contemporary film coverage for various sources, cinema beyond the last decade was a bit neglected on my part this year. My aim for 2013 is that the gap won’t be quite so substantial.

Notable film culture memories from 2012
– Joining the Sound on Sight team.
– Covering the 2012 installments of the Glasgow and Edinburgh film festivals, the latter of which involved press accreditation.
– A wonderful conversation had with Mark Cousins in Edinburgh, partially related to his latest film.
– Discovering the works of Shinji Sômai via the Edinburgh film festival’s fantastic retrospective, seeing, on 35mm, the majority of his always interesting filmography.
– Seeing a number of older films on the big screen in both digitally restored form and 35mm presentation, including Vertigo, Woman in a Dressing Gown, The General, Eyes Without a Face, Annie Hall, Pierrot le fou, Death Watch, Before Sunrise, The Apartment, An American in Paris, Romeo + Juliet, The Secret of NIMH, and Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?
– Becoming a contributor for The Skinny‘s film coverage.
Delving into the podcast world to discuss “film culture”.
– Discovering that my very first review for Sound on Sight had been quoted on the UK DVD cover of the film in question.
