They Shot Pictures #20: Shinji Sōmai

October 5, 2013

I joined some nice folk on the latest episode of the auteur profile podcast They Shot Pictures. At my suggestion, we discussed the work of the very much underseen and overlooked Japanese director Shinji Sōmai, focusing on three films in particular: Sailor Suit and Machine Gun (1981), Typhoon Club (1985) and Moving (1993). Part of the episode’s intent is to expose awareness of the filmmaker to a wider audience, so the podcast is well worth listening to even if you haven’t seen a single one of his films.
